Public vs Private Companies

Please keep in mind that it is easier to find information on public companies. Because public companies are required to file reports with the SEC, there is a lot more information out there about them.

You may still find data on private companies, but it is likely to be much more limited.

Carnegie Library Resources for Company Research

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh has a lot of great business databases. Remote access simply requires that you enter your library barcode. Select "Business" in the Subject dropdown menu and click "Find" to view the full list. Those must useful are:

A to Z Databases: Allows you to find mailing addresses of businesses by location, NAICS/SIC code, and many other variables.
- Helpful for: Finding competitors as well as businesses to market to.
Business Source Premier: Contains information on all things business.
- Helpful for: Finding articles about companies, including marketing practices and more.
Mergent Intellect: Public and private company info
- Helpful for: Wide variety of info on public companies. Basic info on private companies, especially SIC/NAICS numbers.
- Caution: Private company can be quite inaccurate, especially financial data and employee numbers.
