Library Building Use Policies

PLEASE READ: Upon Entry to the Library Building, you MUST

  • Display your Chatham ID and Health Screening Pass at the circulation desk.
  • Have a reservation for one of the seats in the building (see Space Reservation Information box below for more information about this system).
  • Leave promptly at the end of your reservation.
  • Wear a mask appropriately (e.g., over your nose) at all times and follow all social distancing rules and markers while in the library building.
  • Not bring food or order food delivery to the library building. Drinks are permitted.
  • Disinfect your seating area after use.

Also note that water fountains are turned off, except for the water dispenser in lab 101.

Computer labs and printing are available.

Our library procedure for enforcing the above health and safety measures is as follows:

  • 1st incident: Reminder from library staff
  • 2nd incident: Reminder from library staff and Honor Code Incident Report submitted
  • 3rd incident: Reminder from library staff, Honor Code Incident Report submitted, and suspended from the library for 2 weeks.
  • 4th incident: Reminder from library staff, Honor Code Incident Report submitted, and suspended from the library for the semester

Space Reservation Information

In order to make the library a safe space for all, we have implemented a space reservation system for group and individual study rooms, study tables, study carrel desks, comfortable seating, and computer lab seating.

Library patrons are limited to 3 hours of reservation time in the building per day for the following reasons:

  • Research indicates that the longer one spends in a closed building with other people, the greater their chances of contracting this airborne virus. While mask use and physical distancing helps to mitigate this risk, masks vary in quality and the library is a closed building with a 20 year old HVAC system. The latest CDC information concerning the aerosolization of the virus indicates that it can remain in the air longer than thought and reach people as far as 12 feet away. In addition, we are allowing beverages because we recognize that studying for several hours without a drink may be undesirable. This requires the brief repeated removal of masks, increasing the volume of germs that could be entering the air.
  • Since there are significantly fewer seats in the library due to distancing requirements, we wanted to give as many people as possible a chance to use the building.
  • We also researched what others are doing. Other academic libraries are using similar limits – 2 hours is actually the most common choice. CMU has a 2-hour limit, for example. We also looked at the policies of other Chatham buildings: Anderson has 30-minute reserved dining times, and the AFC allows 50-minutes/day. Recognizing that we have students with longer online classes who don’t have time to return home or to their dorm room, we extended to 3 hours/day.
