It is much easier to find information on public companies than on private companies because public companies are required by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to file regular financial reports and other documents.
Whenever you have the choice, it is best to pick a public company to research.
Carnegie Public Library has some great resources for company research as well, including several financial databases, such as Mergent Intellect, Morningstar Investment Research Center, Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage, and Value Line.
