For these resources, you will need a library card from the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh (CLP). You can obtain one here.

Card details:

Free for residents of Pennsylvania. Remains active as long as you use it once every two years.
$30 every two years for non-PA residents.

Download an Excel, comma delineated, or tab delineated file of businesses.

Limitations:

US and Canadian businesses only
Limited to 250 downloads per search
Search results are listed as 20/page and you must select the businesses to download. Thus, you must click through all the pages to "select all" on each page

To download a file of businesses:

Choose from U.S. Businesses, U.S. Historical Businesses, Canadian Business, U.S. New Businesses
Select the tab for the Advanced Search
Select the boxes next to the options on the left side of the screen to open search limits for each. Add the search limits you want.
Click "View Results" in the upper right
On the screen that displays, check the box in the top blue bar to select all items on the screen. NOTE: You will have to page through each list of results and select them to add them to your download.
Click on the blue Download button
Select from the 3 file types in Step One.
Select your level of detail in Step Two (see the Data Dictionary section below for a definition of each field).
Click to "Download Records" or "Email Records"

CLP Librarians focus on helping small businesses and entrepreneurs. Thus, they offer one-on-one appointments discussing such topics as market research, funding, doing bids, business plans, and more.

You can book an appointment with a CLP librarian. You'll need to pick a location first, then the topic (Business). Business librarians are available at:
